Established by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on 5th December 1944. It was awarded for
no less than 6 months service between 22nd June 1941 and November 1944, or for participating in operations
between 20 September to 1st November 1994 in the northern areas around the Kola Peninsula, near Murmansk
in the Barents Sea.
The Obverse of the medal depicts a soldier in full winter clothing, complete with the muzzle of a
PPSH sub machine-gun. There are two tanks in the foreground, a ship and two aircraft (possibily I-16's?)
in the background. The
Russian for "For the Defence of the Soviet Polar Region" runs around the edge. The reverse, as per
all the defence medal states "For our Soviet Motherland".
