Established by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on 1st May 1944, it was awarded for no less than 3 months active service in the time period between July 1942 and October 1943 in the defence of the Caucasus region in Southwestern part of the Soviet Union.
The Obverse of the medal depicts three tanks (two T-50's and one personnel carrier?) rolling across an area with an oil field in the background and a mountain beyond this. Above the mountain are 3 planes, two being single prop and one being a larger twin propellored aircraft. The words "For the defence of Caucasus" is written at the top, with the hammer and sickle along with CCCP at the base. The reverese of the medal, as per all the defence medals of WWII states "For our Soviet Motherland".
