Institued on 25th March 1916 for award to Non-Commisioned Officers and men of the army for individual or associated acts of bravery brought to notice by the recommendation of a commender-in-chief in the field . From 1944 members of the Indian Army also qualified. The Medal was discontinued from the Review of gallantry Medals in 1993, it was rendered obsolete by the Military Cross.
