Commemoration of the 1500th Anniversary of Kiev. Awarded to all citizens who lived in Kiev for no less than 10 years. Awarded also were Kiev defenders who received the medal for the Defence of Kiev, regardless of living place. Kiev is now the captial of the Ukraine. It was probably founded in the 5th Century as a trading post between Constantinople and Scandinavia. Legend speaks of a founder-family consisting of Kyi or Kiy the eldest brother, hence Kiev and his brothers Schek and Khoriv and their sister Lybid. During the 8th and 9th centuries Kiev was an outpost of the Khazar empire.
The chenobyl incident of 1986 affected the city greatly with some areas of the city being polluted by radioactive dust. Kiev finally became a capital again in 1991 with the fall of the Iron curtain.
