Though Ireland (EIRE) declared her neutrality during WWII she took defence measures and her armed forces were expanded. The army increased in size from 4,000 to 50,000. On the front is written the inscription "RE NA PRAINNE", meaning Emergency Period. The reverse shows CAOMNOIRI AITIULA (Local Security Force). To qualify for this medal serviced was as follows:
  • Army, Navy, Air Force: 365 days between 3rd Sept 1939 and 31 Mar 1946
  • Local Defence, Security forces, Air raid precaution service: 2 years
  • Voluntary Aid Division, Irish Red Cross : 2 years
