Established October 1998 to celerbrate 50 years of Atomic Energy between 1948 and 1998. The Obverse of the medal depicts Igor Kurchatov, born in 1903. He was a world class physicist who became the driving force behind the Soviet Union's race to develop the atomic bomb - under Joesph Stalin's regime.

The reverse of the medal shows the dates 1948 to 1998, with the universal atomic energy symbol of three interlinked loops and a naval vessel in the centre.
